Customary Law Program
Since 1995, the Mi'kmaw Customary Law Program has provided culturally appropriate Mi'kmaw justice services to Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Peoples in the justice system.
The services of the Customary Law Program are primarily for youth, but components can be applied to adult cases. Services are offered in Nova Scotia Mi'kmaw communities and surrounding areas. The services are free and available to all Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Peoples living in Nova Scotia.
The program:
Offers the client the option to meet with victims and community members to discuss how to repair the harm caused by their actions
Provides a cultural approach to a formal court setting
Allows the client a chance to think about the reasons and the impact of their actions
Gives the victim a voice and an option to be involved
Empowers communities to be involved in the justice process
Helps justice officials understand the Mi'kmaw culture
