Court Worker Program
The Court Worker Program is designed to provide information and promote an understanding of the court process to Mi'kmaw and Aboriginal clients. As well, court workers help bridge gaps and work to eliminate cultural barriers between the Nova Scotia justice system and Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Peoples.
A court worker will:
Provide information to help the client understand the charge(s), their rights, options and requirements in the criminal court setting
Help the client find legal assistance/representation if needed
Accompany the client in court to provide an explanation of the process, events, orders, sentences, court actions, etc. specific to the client's case
Provide referrals to services and/or agencies which may be helpful to the client
Offer justice support services specific to the client's circumstances
A court worker cannot provide:
Financial assistance of any kind to a client
Services in Family Court
Client transportation
Legal counsel/advice
